Summary:

Page 49 of the “Reference to Microsoft Word” version 3.0 manual incorrectly refers to “^d” as the section break character. This mark actually represents a page break as well.

This error was corrected in the “Reference to Microsoft Word” version 4.0 manual.

When used in the Find What box (for the Find or Change command), ^d will find all manual page breaks and section breaks. However, if the Whole Word or Match Upper/Lowercase option is selected, only random occurrences of these characters will be found. Make sure these options are turned off.

If used in the Change To box (for the Change command), ^d will
replace the search text with a manual page break, not a section mark.

To replace something with a section break, do the following:

  1. Select a section break.
  2. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.
  3. Deselect the section break.
  4. From the Search menu, choose Change (Utilities menu in Word 4.00).
  5. Type “^c” in the Change To box. This will replace the Find What text with the contents of the Clipboard.
