SYMPTOMS

When you start the Microsoft SideWinder Game Device Profiler or attempt to create a new game profile, your computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the video driver installed on your computer is damaged, missing, or outdated.

RESOLUTION

Method 1: Reduce Hardware Acceleration

To troubleshoot this issue, turn down graphics hardware acceleration:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. . Double-click System.
  3. Click the Performance tab, and then click Graphics.
  4. Move the slider until it is one notch to the right of None (the Basic setting).
  5. Click OK, and then click Close.
  6. Click Yes to restart your computer.

If the issue continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 2: Update Video Card Adapter Drivers

Contact your video hardware manufacturer to obtain and install the latest version of the driver for your video adapter. For information about how to contact the manufacturer of your video adapter, see the "More Information" section of this article. You can also visit the following Microsoft Web site to see whether applicable driver updates are available:http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

To identify the name and manufacturer of your video adapter:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type dxdiag, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Display tab. Under Device, look for the name and manufacturer.
  4. Click Exit.
