Error Message on Logon to Cluster Server with SQL 7.0 Installed

Article ID: 248300

Article Last Modified on 2/28/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, when used with:
    • Microsoft Cluster Server 1.1

This article was previously published under Q248300

SYMPTOMS

After you run the SQL Server 7.0, Enterprise Edition, Failover Cluster Wizard and successfully cluster the SQL 7.0 virtual server on Windows 2000, users may occasionally receive the following error message when logging on to a cluster server:

The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Service Manager.lnk' refers to is unavailable.
Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again.

CAUSE

When SQL Server 7.0, Enterprise Edition, is installed on a shared storage device (the cluster disk), an entry is created in the StartUp folder for the SQL Service Manager tool. However, because the shortcut points to a file on the cluster disk, users receive this error message at logon if the SQL group is not online on the current server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:

  • Remove Service Manager from the StartUp group. This is the recommended method.
  • Ignore the error message. If you do so, the Service Manager icon is not available on the taskbar.

WARNING: You should administer the SQL server only with the Cluster Administrative tool or the Cluster.exe command-line tool. Starting or stopping SQL by using any other method (such as by using SQL Service Manager, SQL Enterprise Manager, or Control Panel) may result in registry corruption and/or permanent damage to the SQL Cluster installation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
