Copying Files to LS-120 Floppy Disk Causes Error Message

Article ID: 248249

Article Last Modified on 11/1/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you try to copy files to an LS-120 floppy disk drive by using the Send To 3.5 Floppy (A) command, you receive the following error message:

A:\ is inaccessible. Incorrect Function.

CAUSE

In some computers with an LS-120 drive, the drive is recognized as drive B instead of drive A. In this case, you may see both drives A and B in My Computer, even though there is only one drive (the LS-120 drive functioning as both a floppy disk drive and a 120-MB drive). When this occurs, drive B may be the only drive that works.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, right-click the file in Windows Explorer, click Copy, right-click drive A, and then click Paste.

Another workaround if you have only one drive that appears as both drives A and B is to disable drive A in Device Manager. After you do this, only drive B appears, but is functional.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
