XL2000: Crash When Pasting Array Formulas into Merged Cells

SYMPTOMS

If you copy a range of cells containing an array formula and paste it to another range, Excel may crash, and you may receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:

Excel has caused in invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 015f:30070f2d.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You copy a range containing an array formula and paste it into another range.


-and-

  • The target range for the paste operation contains a merged cell.


-and-

  • The merged cell is not part of the first row or first column of the paste region.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
