SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Excel 97 file posted on MAPI folders in Microsoft Outlook (such as Personal Folders or Exchange Public Folders) the modified date/time is updated even if you make no modifications.

CAUSE

When you open an Excel file on the NTFS file system, Excel 97 updates the modified time of the file to the current time. However, if you do not modify the Excel file, Excel puts back the original modified time of the file.

When you open an Excel file on a MAPI folder, Outlook creates a temporary file and folder for the Excel file and remembers the modified time of the temporary file. Outlook then starts Excel 97, which updates the modified time for the file. Even if you close the Excel file without modifying it, Excel notifies Outlook that the file is closing before it puts back the original modified time of the file. Outlook may then infer the file is updated, and so it updates the modified time of the Excel file on the MAPI folder to the current time.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
