SYMPTOMS
When you enter your credentials into the Windows Logon prompt, and then click OK, you may be prompted to enter your credentials again to log on to another provider such as the Microsoft Netware client even though you synchronized your passwords and enabled password caching.
CAUSE
This problem can occur in the following scenarios:
- You log on to a remote network using Dial-Up Networking and you are prompted by the Microsoft Netware client to enter your credentials.
- You suspend and resume your computer and you are prompted by the Microsoft Netware client to enter your credentials.
- You log off the Microsoft Netware client and run Winipcfg.exe to release or renew your IP address.
When you register a new LANA on the computer a device change message is broadcast throughout the computer. The Multiple Provider Router (MPR) requests all providers log on by calling the NpLogon API. In certain instances, the password passed to each provider's NpLogon function may be encrypted.
RESOLUTION
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
