SYMPTOMS
If you upgrade to Internet Explorer 5.01 and then install the 128-bit version of Internet Explorer from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download, the browser's cipher strength does not change to 128-bit.
CAUSE
The 128-bit upgrade for Internet Explorer 5.01 has not yet been released. The 128-bit upgrade available on the Windows download page applies to earlier versions of Internet Explorer. Therefore, installing this after you have upgraded your browser to Internet Explorer 5.01 will not affect the cipher strength.
RESOLUTION
If you have 128-bit encryption before you install Internet Explorer 5.01, the cipher strength will remain at 128-bit.
If you are upgrading from a 40-bit browser, you can install the 128-bit upgrade first (from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download), then install Internet Explorer 5.01 to maintain the 128-bit encryption.
NOTE: This resolution only works if you are upgrading from Internet Explorer 5.0. If you are upgrading from Internet Explorer 4.01 or earlier, the system will not retain 128-bit high-encryption.
If you have already upgraded to Internet Explorer 5.01 and would like 128-bit encryption, you must uninstall Internet Explorer 5.01, then install the 128-bit upgrade from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download. Once this is complete, you may reinstall Internet Explorer 5.01 and maintain your 128-bit cipher strength.

Internet Explorer 5.01 now comes with 56-bit encryption. This is an upgrade from previous versions of Internet Explorer, which came with 40-bit encryption. The 128-bit version of Internet Explorer 5.01 will be made available later this year, at which time it can be downloaded from the Windows Update site and the Windows download pages. If you are in need of 128-bit encryption for access to specific sites, use one of the methods described above to increase your cipher strength.
To verify if your system is using high encryption:
- Click the Start menu, then select Find/Files or Folders.
- In the "Named" field type schannel.dll. Make sure your system drive (for example C:) is selected in the "Look in" field, then click Find now.
- When the search finds the file located in the Windows\System folder, right-click the file and select Properties. Click the Version tab to see if it displays US and Canada (128-bit high encryption level) or Export Version (40-bit or 56-bit normal encryption level).
