256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the IBM 16/4 Token-Ring PCI Adapter 2 with Wake on LAN in a localized Polish version of Windows 98 Second Edition, you receive the following error message:

Btad (in polish)

This driver release only supports Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0, Windows 95 OSR2.x (4.00.950 B or later), Windows 98, and Windows 2000. Please download the driver for Microsoft Windows 95 from the support Website.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Version value in the following registry key uses the value data System Windows 98 in the Polish version of Windows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

The IBM driver installation software parses this registry key to determine the version of Windows. It looks for the the value data Windows 98 in the Version value.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To resolve this issue, use Registry Editor to change the value data in the Version string value from System Windows 98 to Windows 98.

NOTE: After the IBM Token Ring driver installation is complete, Microsoft recommends that you change the registry key back to read System Windows 98 because other drivers from other manufacturers may require it.
