If you change the symbols in Excel charts by programmatically copying a .bmp (bitmap) from a cell and pasting over the symbol, after several iterations, various symbols in the Excel charts are no longer displayed.

After you save the worksheet, the images return temporarily, but you may receive one or more of the following error messages:

VB runtime error '1004':

Paste method of Series class failed.

Out of Memory

Not enough system resources to display completely.

After you receive the error messages, you may see uncontrolled screen flashing and updating, and you must turn off the power to restart your computer.

NOTE: If you save the worksheet and close Excel, all the chart symbols are displayed when you reopen the worksheet.

This problem occurs with the Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition operating systems.

To work around this problem, close and reopen Excel as soon the problem occurs, or restart the operating system.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
