Second CNAME Deletes the First on Windows 2000 Domain Name Server

Article ID: 247432

Article Last Modified on 2/28/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

This article was previously published under Q247432

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to add a second CNAME record for a domain name to a Domain Name Service (DNS) server running Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, the first CNAME record for the domain is deleted.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs by design. You can have only one CNAME for each record. The second CNAME entry overwrites the first without giving a warning message or error message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
