SYMPTOMS
When you start a program (for example, Microsoft Word) as a COM object from a Terminal Server session client, the user environment variables are not inherited by this instance of the program. If you start the same program from the Terminal Server console, the user environment variables are inherited.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT Server version 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT Server version 4.0, Terminal Server Edition Service Pack 6.
