SYMPTOMS

When you try to save a file as a vCard, you may receive the following error message:

Can't open file: <path>. The file may not exist, you may not have permission to open it, or it may be open in another program. Right-click the folder that contains the file, and then click Properties to check your permissions for the folder.

When you attempt to export or forward a vCard, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Outlook
Could not export to vCard.

CAUSE

The Windows component used for exporting and forwarding as vCards was adversely affected when you upgraded to Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.01.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Note The vCard fix was completed during the Office SR-1 release development, but it is a separate fix and not part of the core SR-1 files. The fix is available in the Q248120.exe file in the Support folder on the SR-1 CD-ROM. The SR-1 download, by itself, does not include this specific fix. To apply this fix, run the Q248120.exe file.

This fix is also included in the vCard Update for Office 2000 SR-1 that is available on the Windows Update site and it is also included in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5.

WORKAROUND

You may be able to work around this problem by opening the contact and then on the Actions menu, clicking Forward instead of Forward as vCard.

Note If the Forward button in not displayed on the Standard Toolbar, maximize the message window. On 'View' menu, point to Toolbars, and click each toolbar that is checked until only the Standard Toolbar remains. The Forward button should now be displayed. If this does not work, you may need to customize the Standard Toolbar to add the Forward button.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.  This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a and in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and later versions of Internet Explorer.

MORE INFORMATION

The vCard code is in the Windows Address Book. Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 updates the Wab32.dll file, which does not support exporting and forwarding vCards.
