Article ID: 247219

Article Last Modified on 11/1/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition

This article was previously published under Q247219

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional on a computer with a non-Advanced Configuration Power Interface basic input/output system (ACPI BIOS), sound devices do not work and you receive the following error message:

This device is disabled because the firmware of the device did not give it the required resources.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you install Windows 2000 on a computer that uses an advanced power management (APM) BIOS. The APM BIOS does not allocate resources to the sound device because Windows 2000 does not consider APM BIOS to be a Plug and Play BIOS.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, disable Plug and Play in the system BIOS and enable all devices.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
