Save Dialog Box Closes Quickly when Shutting Down Computer with Program Open

Article ID: 247168

Article Last Modified on 11/1/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition

This article was previously published under Q247168

SYMPTOMS

When you are properly shutting down Microsoft Windows 2000 by clicking OK in the Shut Down Windows dialog box, and a program is still running, a dialog box appears, asking whether you want to save changes to the active program. When you do not respond within about five seconds, you receive an End Program dialog box that offers only two options, End Now and Cancel.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

When you click End Now, intending to cancel the second dialog box and then save changes to the active program, Windows 2000 immediately shuts down. If you click Cancel, another dialog box asks if you want to save changes, but the option is not effective.
