Uninstalling HP Precision Scan Pro Software Disables Scanner

SYMPTOMS

When you install the Hewlett-Packard (HP) Precision Scan Pro software on a computer running Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, and you plug in an HP scanner and then remove the HP Precision Scan Pro software, the scanner does not work.

CAUSE

After you install the HP Precision Scan Pro software and plug in an HP scanner, the HP data source files are renamed to *.dsx. When you remove the HP Precision Scan Pro software, the system does not convert the data source files back to their original Windows 2000 format.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, manually rename the data source.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional.
