SYMPTOMS

When you receive unencrypted e-mail messages in Microsoft Outlook 97 from another user, you can manually forward that e-mail message to another security-enabled user after you sign and seal it. However, if you try to forward that mail as signed and sealed by using either a server-based rule or a client-based rule, it is not forwarded.

Note Unencrypted e-mail messages are messages that have not been digitally sealed.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. You can use rules only to forward ordinary e-mail messages as non-secure messages. Non-secure mail messages cannot be forwarded as signed and sealed messages using rules.

Note Messages that have been only signed but not sealed can also be forwarded to both a security-enabled user and to a user who is not security-enabled.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, manually forward the message. If you have digital security enabled, and your recipient is also security-enabled, the mail can be sent digitally signed and sealed. Also, make sure that you pick the recipients from the Contacts folder, not from the global address list.

In Outlook 97, you can choose to digitally sign and seal all outgoing e-mail messages. To do this, follow these steps.

Note The information in this article also applies to Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, to Microsoft Outlook 2002, and to Microsoft Outlook 2000.

1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. Click the Security tab.
3. Click to select the Encrypt message contents and attachments check box.
4. Click to select the Add digital signature to message check box.
5. Click Apply.
6. Click OK.
