SYMPTOMS

When you log on to a Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional-based computer as a Power User and then try to use the Internet Connection Wizard (ICW), you receive the following error message:

You are restricted from running the Internet Connection Wizard because you are not an administrator on this machine. Contact your network administrator for more information.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. In Control Panel, double-click Internet Options.
  2. On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
  3. In the Proxy Server area, click to select the Use Proxy Server check box, and then click OK.

You can now use the Internet even though you are not permitted to use the Internet Connection Wizard.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional.
