SUMMARY

The Microsoft BackOffice Modem Sharing service supports client computers running Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows for Workgroups, and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. A modem-sharing client connects to the modem pool configured on the computer running Small Business Server (SBS). This article describes how to configure computers running Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 Workstation to use the modem-sharing pool on an SBS-based computer.

MORE INFORMATION

You must install the Modem Sharing client using the Setup Computer Wizard, and configure a modem driver (the same driver that is on the server) before you connect the computer to the modem pool. During client Setup, a Modem Sharing port is installed on your computer. To use this shared port, you must first install a modem and then configure the modem to use the shared port. To install a modem, use the following steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Modems.
  2. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the modem. Be sure to install the modem that matches the modem attached to the server computer.

To connect Windows 95-based client computers to the modem pool on your server:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click Modem-Sharing Client, and then click Add/Remove.
  3. Follow the instructions for adding a port to your Windows 95-based computer. For the modem pool path, type the server name and pool name (for example, type \\servername\modempoolname), and then click Finish.
  4. Click OK.

To view the properties of a configured port:

  1. On the Windows 95 desktop, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. On the Device Manager tab, click the plus sign (+) next to Ports. Ports assigned for modem sharing are shown with a corresponding port number.
  3. Select a port, and then click Properties to view the port settings.
  4. Click OK.

To connect Windows NT 4.0 Workstation-based computers to the modem pool on your server:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Ports.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Click Modem Sharing Port, and then click OK.
  4. In the COM Port Number box, click the COM port number in the list.
  5. In the Server box, type the name of your SBS-based computer that has the shared port resources available.
  6. In the Pool box, type the name of the modem pool that you are connecting to on the server.
  7. Click OK, and then click OK.
