SYMPTOMS

While transferring files from one computer to another using the Infrared File Transfer Utility in Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition, you may experience slow performance or the file transfer may fail to complete successfully.

CAUSE

The infrared protocol stack used in Windows 98 Second Edition is unreliable at higher transfer speeds, (greater than 115.2 kilobits per second [Kbps]).

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, reduce the maximum Infrared transfer speed to 115.2 Kbps or less, according to the following instructions:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Infrared.
  2. In Infrared Monitor, click the Options tab.
  3. Click the checkbox next to Limit connection speed to: to select it and enable the drop-down list of available speed settings.
  4. From the drop-down list of available speed settings, select a speed of 115.2 kpbs or less, and click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was corrected in Windows Millennium Edition.
