  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition

SYMPTOMS

Windows 2000 may not resume from Standby mode on Compaq DeskPro C466/810 computers on a "Wake on LAN" event, even though you have enabled the Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby option for the network adapter on the Power Management tab.

CAUSE

There are two options on the Power Management tab for the network adapter:

  • Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby
  • Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

The Wake on LAN feature does not work if you enable the first option but not the second.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue and cause Windows 2000 to resume on a Wake on LAN event, click to select both of the options on the Power Management tab.

MORE INFORMATION

Note that the Power Management tab for the network adapter in these computers is not available if the network adapter contains the 686j1 ROMs that are dated 01-xx-99.

This behavior also occurs with a clean installation of Windows 2000 on the following computers:

  • DeskPro EP (BIOS 4-2-99)

This behavior also occurs after an upgrade from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4.0 installed on the following computers:

  • EP Series/810 (BIOS 12-3-99)
  • EN Series/810 (BIOS 12-3-99)
  • DeskPro EP (BIOS 8-1-99)
  • Professional Workstation SP700 (BIOS 6-21-99)

Note that waking on a LAN event from Hibernate mode is affected in the same manner as S1 Standby mode. Also, Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) power management support must be installed in Windows 2000 to use the Wake on LAN feature. You may see these options available for the network adapter on the Power Management tab even if power management is not installed.
