SYMPTOMS

The Help file for the Backup tool included with Windows 2000 contains incorrect or incomplete information about backing up migrated files that are located in remote storage.

  • The Help topic for the /RS:{yes|no} Backup command-line switch states that it backs up the Removable Storage database.

If you click the Removable Storage link, the topic states:

A service used for managing removable media (such as tapes and discs) and storage devices (libraries). Removable Storage allows applications to access and share the same media resources.

  • The Help text for the advanced option named Backup data that is in Remote Storage states:

Backs up data that has been designated for Remote Storage. If you are using Remote Storage to store data, you should choose this option to ensure that your Remote Storage placeholder files are backed up. If you do not use Remote Storage to store data, you do not need to choose this option.

The Help text for these two items is incorrect.

RESOLUTION

The correct information for these topics is listed below.

  • The /RS:{yes|no} switch specifies to also back up migrated file data located in remote storage. It is not used to back up the Removable Storage Manager (RSM) database as stated. The Removable Storage database is automatically backed up whenever the %SystemRoot% folder is backed up, and does not require a separate command switch.
  • Windows 2000 backs up the remote storage placeholder files by default without your selecting any additional check boxes or using the /RS switch. If you want to back up both the placeholder file and the actual data located in remote storage, you must click to select one of the following advanced option check boxes or use the /RS switch:
    • Backup migrated Remote Storage data (Using the Backup Wizard)

      -or-
    • Backup data that is in Remote Storage. (Using the Backup tab)
If you then schedule the backup job, the /RS:yes switch is used to back up files located in remote storage.

NOTE: Backing up files located in remote storage requires two separate tape devices because Backup asks remote storage to mount the tape that contains the data associated with the placeholder file and copy the data from the remote storage tape to the current backup tape. This process requires Read access to the remote storage tape and Read/Write access to the backup tape. When the backup job is complete, the backup tape contains a complete backup set of all files located on the volume, including the data located in remote storage.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
