DNS Event ID 5504, 9999 and 5000 Warnings Fill Event Viewer

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you install the latest Dns.exe program on a computer running Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Service Pack 3 and functioning as Domain Name Server (DNS), Event Viewer may record numerous Event ID 5504, Event ID 9999, and Event ID 5000 errors, listing DNS as the source. There are no name resolution or zone transfer problems.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the new Dns.exe program provides improved error-logging capabilities, which can account for the increased number of warnings recorded in the Event Viewer.

Also, the use of DNS forwarders can generate excessive traffic on your network, causing Event Viewer to record warnings. These warnings can result from excessive replication traffic or from numerous run-time events, which are usually associated with the reception of bad or unexpected packets.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, discontinue the use of forwarders on the DNS servers on your network. Follow these steps:

  1. On the Server List in DNS Manager, right-click the IP address of the DNS server, and then click Properties.
  2. Click Forwarders.
  3. Click to clear the Use Forwarders and the Operate As Slave Server check boxes, and then click OK.

Additional query words: new upgrade dns.exe
