SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to print to a Lexmark Optra printer from Microsoft Publisher 2000 or Microsoft Publisher 98, you may experience either of the following symptoms:

  • The printout may consist of the following error message:

    Error: undefined; Offending Command

  • The print job may not be sent to the printer successfully.

This behavior has been reported when using the Lexmark Optra S1855PS, and the Lexmark Optra S2455 printers.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Lexmark Postscript printer driver (Lexps.drv) is installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, first verify that the Lexps.drv printer driver is installed on your computer. To do this:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Right-click the Lexmark Optra S2455 icon, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, click Print Test Page.


A list of drivers and files used by the printer is printed.

If the Lexps.drv printer driver is listed, use one of the following two methods to resolve this issue.

Method 1: Download and Install the Microsoft Windows 95/98 Compatible Lexmark PostScript Printer Driver

To download and install the Lexmark PostScript printer driver that is compatible with Windows 98 and Windows 95:

  1. On the desktop, double-click My Computer.
  2. Double-click drive where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Microsoft Windows is installed.
  3. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
  4. Right-click the New Folder folder, click Rename, and then type Lexmark.
  5. Locate the Mpwn95ae.exe printer driver (Microsoft Windows 95/98 PostScript driver) at the following Lexmark Web site:


http://drivers.lexmark.com/drivers.nsf/SelectPrinter?Lexmark+Optra+S

  1. Click Mpwn95ae.exe.
  2. Next to File Name - Click here to download, click the Mpwn95ae.exe icon.
  3. Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
  4. In the Save in box, click drive where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Windows is installed.
  5. Double-click the Lexmark folder, and then click Save.
  6. Click the drive taskbar button where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Windows is installed.
  7. Double-click the Lexmark folder, and then double-click the Mpwn95ae.exe file.
  8. In the Finished - Mpwn95ae window, click the Close button.
  9. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  10. Double-click Add Printer.
  11. Click Next.
  12. When you are asked How is this printer attached to your printer?, click to select the appropriate response (either Local Printer or Network Printer), and then click Next.


If you click Network Printer, enter the Network path or queue name of your network printer in the Network path or queue name box, click your answer to the Do you print from MS-DOS-based programs? question, and then click Next.

  1. Click Have Disk.
  2. Click Browse.
  3. Under Drives, click drive where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Windows is installed, and then double-click drive in the Folders box.
  4. Double-click the Lexmark folder.
  5. Click OK, and then click OK again.
  6. Under Manufacturers, click Lexmark.
  7. Under Printers, click Lexmark Optra S 2455.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Click the port you want to use with the printer, and then click Next.
  10. In the Printer name box, type the name you want for your printer.
  11. Click whether or not you want this printer to serve as your default printer.
  12. Click Next, and then click Finish.

Method 2: Download and Install the Lexmark PPD files and the Adobe PostScript Printer Driver

To install the Lexmark PPD files and the Adobe PostScript printer driver:

  1. On the desktop, double-click My Computer.
  2. Double-click drive where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Windows is installed.
  3. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
  4. Right-click the New Folder folder, click Rename, and then type Lexmark.
  5. Locate the Mpado_ae.exe file (PPD files for Adobe Systems driver) at the following Lexmark Web site:


http://drivers.lexmark.com/drivers.nsf/SelectPrinter?Lexmark+Optra+S

  1. Click Mpado_ae.exe.
  2. Next to File Name - Click here to download, click the Mpado_ae.exe icon.
  3. Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
  4. In the Save in box, click drive where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Windows is installed.
  5. Double-click the Lexmark folder, and then click Save.
  6. Click the drive taskbar button where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Windows is installed.
  7. In the Lexmark folder, double-click the Mpado_ae.exe file.
  8. In the Finished - Mpado_ae window, click the Close button.
  9. Click the close button in the Lexmark window.
  10. Download the latest Adobe PostScript printer driver (AdobePS 4.3 or later) that is appropriate for Windows 98 and Windows 95 from the following Adobe Web site:


http://www.adobe.com/products/printerdrivers/main.html

  1. Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
  2. In the Save in box, click Desktop, and then click Save.
  3. On the desktop, double-click the Aps431eng.exe icon.
  4. Click Install a New PostScript Printer, and then click Next.
  5. Click to select the option that describes how your printer is attached to your computer, and then click Next.
  6. Click Browse.
  7. Under Drives, click drive where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Windows is installed, and then double-click drive in the Folders box.
  8. Double-click the Lexmark folder, and then click OK.
  9. Under Printers, click Lexmark Optra S 2455, and then click Next.
  10. Under Available ports, click the port you want to use with this printer, and then click Next.
  11. In the Printer Information window, type the printer name you want in the Printer name box, select the options you want, and then click Next.
  12. Click Install.
  13. For additional instructions about how to install the Adobe PostScript printer driver, download or open the Installing and Using AdobePS Drivers Adobe Acrobat PDF file from the following Lexmark Web site:

NOTE: To read an Adobe Acrobat PDF file, you need to install Adobe Acrobat.
