SYMPTOMS

After applying Service Pack 3 for Microsoft Site Server 3.0 the posting acceptor may fail when uploading files with the following message in the browser:

No files were uploaded.

This is followed by a Error while uploading contents dialog box with the following message:

The Web server returned the following error: Unknown error was encountered.

This is accompanied by errors in the event log on the Web server from source CPSHOST. The first, with event number 8721, contains the following message:

The file is empty or does not exist.

The second, with event number 8957, contains the following message:

User: domain\user Unknown error was encountered.

In addition, another error message may display:

The Web server you selected does not indicate support for the service provider you selected.

This problem may occur more frequently when uploading larger files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Site Server version 3.0. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Site Server 3.0. This problem was first corrected in Site Server 3.0 Service Pack 4.

WORKAROUND

If an uninstall folder was created during the install of Site Server 3.0 Service Pack 3 then you may restore the original posting acceptor functionality by performing the following steps:

  1. Copy Cpshost.dll.32 from "\Microsoft Site Server\sp3\backup" to "\Inetpub\Scripts"
  2. Rename the current Cpshost.dll in "\Inetpub\Scripts" to Cpshost.sp3
  3. Rename Cpshost.dll.32 in "\Inetpub\Scripts" to Cpshost.dll
