SYMPTOMS

When you start the computer, you hear the Critical Stop sound even though no critical stop occurs. Or, the volume buttons on the keyboard may not respond.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the following conditions are true:

  • You are using a Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer.
  • Version 1.0 of the IntelliType Pro software is installed on the computer.
  • The SpeedKey utility starts when you start the computer.

Note This behavior has only been reported with clean installations of Windows 98 SE. It has not been reported with Windows 98 SE upgrades from Microsoft Windows 95.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, download and install the latest IntelliType Pro software. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft IntelliType Pro software, version 1.0.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft IntelliType Pro software, version 1.1.

MORE INFORMATION

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft IntelliType Pro, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Follow the instructions on your screen to remove the IntelliType Pro software.
  5. Shut down the computer.
  6. Disconnect the keyboard from the PS/2 port on the computer.


Note Leave the keyboard connected to the USB port on the computer.

  1. Connect your old keyboard to the PS/2 port on the computer, and then restart the computer.


If you are prompted to insert the Windows 98 Second Edition CD when Windows detects the USB keyboard, do so.

  1. Reinstall the IntelliType Pro software.
  2. Shut down the computer.
  3. Disconnect your old keyboard from the PS/2 port on the computer.
  4. Connect the Internet Keyboard or Natural Keyboard Pro to the PS/2 port on the computer, and then restart the computer.


Note Leave the keyboard connected to the USB port on the computer.

If the Critical Stop sound continues to play when you start the computer, you can work around this issue by disabling the "Critical Stop" sound event. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Sounds.
  3. In the Events box, click Critical Stop.
  4. In the Name box under Sound, click (None), and then click OK.

The Speedkey utility is a terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) program that provides support for the Hot Keys on the keyboard.
