SYMPTOMS

If you save a database in Microsoft Works in the dBase IV (.dbf) format, you may receive the following error message when you attempt to open the database in Microsoft Access:

The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object '<filename>'. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the file name for the database consists of more than eight characters.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, rename the database file according to MS-DOS 8.3 standards. To do this:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type the file name for the database, and then click Find Now.
  3. In the Look in box, click to select drive where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which the database is located.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Right-click the database file, and then click Rename.
  6. Type a file name with an eight-character prefix followed by a three-character extension.
  7. Press ENTER.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
