Certification Authority Service Stops Working After File System Conversion

SYMPTOMS

The Application log may report:

Certificate Services did not start: Unable to initialize the database connection for your CA name. Class not registered 0x80040154.

CAUSE

The certification authority (CA) service stops running after you convert your hard disk from the FAT to the NTFS file system.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, uninstall the CA service, and then reinstall it using the same CA name, key pair, and database as in the previous installation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
