Windows Media Services 4.1 Logs Incorrect X-Duration Fields

Q246241

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Services version 4.1

SYMPTOMS

Under some circumstances, Windows Media Services 4.1 may log incorrect and extremely large x-duration values. In particular, this problem seems to occur with the Window Media Player version 6.2.5.410. When this problem occurs, the x-duration value may be greater than 29 hours, and in most cases, it has a value similar to c-starttime.

CAUSE

This problem stems from a possible race condition, which prevents this value from being updated when the player fails to receive any data. The duration value in question is initialized to a value of 0xFFFFFFFF. In some cases, this value is actually reported to the log file (where it appears as a value of 4294967).
