SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft Home Publishing 2000, you may receive the following error message:

Homepub.exe caused an invalid page fault in module Qdgw.dll.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if an Epson inkjet printer is attached to your computer.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, install the Epson Stylus Color ESC/P2 printer driver or the Epson LQ 2550 printer driver.

NOTE: These drivers are available on the Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM, and they are available as a free download from the following Epson Web site:

If the issue continues to occur, or if you are not using an Epson printer, reduce your graphics hardware acceleration setting. To do this:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. Click the Performance tab, and then click Graphics.
  4. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider all the way to None.
  5. Click OK, and then click Close.
  6. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

If the issue continues to occur, manually register the Qdgw.dll and Pprnedit.dll files. To do this:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Click Browse.
  3. In the Look in box, click the hard disk on which Home Publishing 2000 is installed.
  4. Double-click the Program Files folder.
  5. Double-click the Microsoft Home Publishing 2000 folder.
  6. In the Files of type box, click All Files.
  7. Double-click the QDgw.dll file.

    If the QDgw.dll file is not displayed, make sure that Windows Explorer is configured to display .dll files. To do this:
    1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
    2. On the View menu, click Options or Folder
      Options.
    3. On the View tab, click Show all files, and then click OK.
    4. Close the My Computer window.
  8. Press the HOME key, type regsvr32, press the SPACEBAR, and then click OK.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Click Start, and then click Run.
  11. Press the END key, delete QDgw.dll from the end of the line, type Pprnedit.dll, and then click OK.

    NOTE: Make sure that you do not delete the quotation mark at the end of the line.
  12. Click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

To install and use either of these Epson printer drivers:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Double-click Add Printer, and then click Next.
  3. Click Local printer, and then click Next.
  4. In the Manufacturers box, click Epson.
  5. In the Printers box, click Epson Stylus Color ESC/P2 or Epson LQ 2550, and then click Next.
  6. In the Available ports box, click the port your printer is connected to, and then click Next.
  7. Under Do you want your Windows-based programs to use this printer as the default printer, click No, and then click Next.
  8. When you are prompted to print a test page, click Yes (recommended), and then click Finish.
  9. When the test page is finished printing, click Yes.
  10. Close the Printers window.
