Article ID: 244609

Article Last Modified on 9/26/2005

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q244609

SYMPTOMS

When you try to save a PowerPoint presentation that you have opened and changed, you may receive the following message:

presentation name.ppt is currently in use. PowerPoint can't modify it at this time.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  1. The PowerPoint presentation is located on a file server where one user has read-only file permissions to the presentation, but another user has full permissions.
  2. The user with full permissions (User A) opens the file.
  3. The user with read-only permissions (User B) opens the file.

PowerPoint does not detect that User B is restricted to read-only permissions, but because PowerPoint cannot open the file as read/write, it opens the file as read-only.

  1. User A tries to save the file.

Because PowerPoint cannot obtain the read/write permission that it needs to save the file, User A receives the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
