SYMPTOMS
The channel name created by the Microsoft Internet Chat (MIC) client on one chat server in the chat network is not propagated correctly to the other servers. If a channel name is created as "test", then it is listed as "%#test" on the other chat servers.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Exchange Server 5.5. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 4.

After you install Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 3 chat service on the servers and replace Chatsvc.exe with the above hotfix, and after you create a portal, you must add the following registry key under the portal's entry to change the behavior described in the "Symptoms" section. To do this, perform the following steps on each server in the chat network:
- Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
- Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\ChatSvc\Parameters\Portals\portalname
- On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value Name: Use 2.0 Channel Names
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1 - Quit Registry Editor.
- Restart the chat service.
