SUMMARY
The Windows 2000 Backup (Ntbackup.exe) tool has several options that are either not honored when you schedule a backup to start at a later time or not available when you use command-line parameters or switches.

The following options in the Windows 2000 Backup graphical user interface (GUI) are ignored if you schedule a backup job to run at a later time:
- The System State option. When you include the system state in a backup job, the type of backup performed for the system state files is always either a Normal or Copy backup, even if you select another backup type (such as Incremental, Differential, or Daily).
This behavior occurs because the system state consists of many items and files that must be complete. Backup ensures this by always backing up these files and restoring them in their entirety.
- The Automatically backup System Protected Files with the System State advanced option is always used, even if you clear the check box.
System Protected Files is considered one of the required system state items. It cannot be skipped when you schedule a backup. You can use this interactive-only option to create a system state backup on a computer that has limited local storage, or to create a smaller system state image for support reasons.
The following Windows 2000 Backup GUI options have no equivalent command-line parameter:
- The Create an Emergency Repair Disk option is available only in the GUI.
- The Restore option is not available using a command-line parameter. You can perform restore operations only interactively.
- The Back up the contents of mounted drives option has no command-line switch to override it. When you run Backup from a command line, the option that is set in the Backup GUI for the user is used.
- The Automatically backup System Protected Files with the System State advanced option has no command-line switch equivalent to override it.
- The following command-line parameter has no GUI equivalent option:
The /UM switch instructs Backup to overwrite the first tape it encounters in the /P "Device_Pool_Name" media pool you specify. This allows for unattended backups with stand-alone tape libraries.
