SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 2000, when you save a project, you may experience any of the following behaviors:

  • The Save As dialog box does not list Microsoft Project 98 in the Save as type list.
  • The Save dialog box contains an icon for an older version of Microsoft Project.
  • You receive the following warning message that you are saving in Microsoft Project 98 format when you are trying to save to Microsoft Project 2000 .MPP format:

Saving to Microsoft Project 98 format:

'(Project Name)' may contain features that are not compatible with the Microsoft Project 98 format, you may lose data or incompatible features. To see what might be lost, click Help.

    You can:

    - Keep the Microsoft Project 98 format, which leaves out data for any incompatible feature, and which may cause your schedule to change. (Note that you may also loose baseline data)

    - Cancel the save operation. You can then save a copy in the latest Microsoft Project format.

If you cancel the save operation and attempt to save the project in Microsoft Project 2000 format again, you receive the same warning message.

CAUSE

When you install Microsoft Project 98 on a computer on which Microsoft Project 2000 has already been installed, Setup sets the current version (most recently installed version) in the Microsoft Windows registry to version 8.0 (the Microsoft Project 98 internal version number).

When you subsequently save a project in .mpp format from Microsoft Project 2000, the file format is based on the current version that is stored in the registry. Because the current version in the registry is 8.0, the file is saved in Microsoft Project 98 format.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the appropriate method for your situation.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Method 1

Remove Microsoft Project 98, delete the version of the Global.mpt file that Microsoft Project 98 installed, and then reinstall Microsoft Project 2000. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. Click to select Microsoft Project 98, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Follow the steps in the wizard to remove Microsoft Project 98.
  5. On the Start menu, point to Find, and then click Files and Folders. (In Microsoft Windows 2000, click Start, point to Search and then click For Files and Folders.)
  6. In the Named box, type Global.mpt. (In Windows 2000, type Global.mpt in the Search for files or folders named box.)
  7. In the Look in list, click Local hard drives, and then click Find Now. (In Windows 2000, click Local Harddrives in the Look in list, and then click Search).

At least two Global.mpt files are found.

  1. To verify which version of the Global.mpt file Microsoft Project 98 installed, right-click each Global.mpt file, and click Properties on the shortcut menu. Then, click the General tab and find the Created date setting. The Microsoft Project 98 version has a Created date in 1998.
  2. Delete the version of the Global.mpt file that was installed with Microsoft Project 98.
  3. Reinstall Microsoft Project 2000.

Method 2

If you need to have both Microsoft Project 98 and Microsoft Project 2000 installed on the same computer, follow these steps in the order presented to help reduce potential problems:

  1. Remove both versions of Microsoft Project.
  2. Install Microsoft Project 98.
  3. Install Microsoft Project 2000 in a different folder from where you installed Microsoft Project 98.

NOTE: This method does not eliminate all problems that are associated with having both versions installed at the same time. Microsoft does not recommend or support the installation of Microsoft Project 98 and Microsoft Project 2000 under the same operating system on the same computer.

Method 3

If your computer is capable of running two versions of Microsoft Windows (dual-booting), you can safely install Microsoft Project 98 under one version of Windows, and Microsoft Project 2000 under the second version of Windows.

MORE INFORMATION

If you install both Microsoft Project 98 and Microsoft Project 2000 on the same computer, you may also experience unexpected behavior in some components of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) while you use the Visual Basic Editor in either program.
