SUMMARY
If you want to use MSN, The Microsoft Network, in Windows 2000, you can manually configure MSN for dial-up Internet access, e-mail, and newsgroups by using the following procedures to configure these services.
NOTE: You must already have an MSN membership; you cannot currently set up a new account in Windows 2000.
The MSN client is not a part of the Windows 2000 distribution CD-ROM.

How to Manually Configure Windows 2000 for MSN Dial-Up Access
You can use the following steps to create a dial-up connection to connect to MSN and the Internet, which you can use with Microsoft Internet Explorer or a third-party browser.
- Obtain the local MSN phone number(s) using the appropriate method:
- From a computer with MSN installed, check the properties of the dial-up connections in the Dial-Up Networking folder. Write down this number.
- From a computer on which you can gain access to the Internet, obtain a number for United States, United Kingdom, or Japan at the following Web site: Then, on the right side of the page, click Access Numbers under Quick Links.
- In Network and Dial Up Connections, run the Make New Connection wizard.
- Click Dial-Up to the Internet, and then continue to the next screen.
- Click I want to set up my Internet connection manually, and then continue to the next screen.
- Click I connect through a phone Line and a modem, and then click Next.
- Type the MSN telephone number, and then click Next.
- Type your user name in the following format:
MSN/
username - Type your password.
- Type an appropriate name for the connection (for example, MSN).
- Click No when you are prompted to create a mail account.
- In the Dial-Up Connections folder, right-click your new MSN dial-up icon.
- On the Options tab, click to select the Display progress while connecting and Prompt for name and password check boxes.
NOTE: Do not click to select the Include Windows logon domain check box. - On the Networking tab, click to clear the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks check box.
- If you have more than one MSN telephone number, on the General tab, click Alternates, and add each additional number. You can also configure the order of preference in which the numbers are dialed, and have each number dialed automatically if a busy signal is reached.
You can now go to your Dial-Up Connections folder (click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network) and dial into MSN. After you are connected, you can start your browser and you should be online.
How to Manually Configure Outlook Express for MSN E-Mail
After you successfully configure your computer for dial-up access to MSN, you can configure Microsoft Outlook Express to send and receive e-mail messages.
- Start Microsoft Outlook Express. If the Internet Connection Wizard starts, quit the wizard by clicking the Close button (the "X" button) in the upper-right corner of the Internet Connection Wizard dialog box).
- On the Tools/Accounts menu, click Add, and then click Mail.
- Type your e-mail name (for example,
myname@msn.com). - Type your e-mail server names:
For incoming type, pop3.email.msn.com.
For outgoing type, smtp.email.msn.com.
NOTE: If you are connecting to the internet through a LAN, DSL, Cable mode, or Satellite connection, type secure.smtp.email.msn.com as the outgoing mail server and check the box My server requires authentication.
- Type your user name and password (do not precede your user name with "MSN/"). Make sure the Log on using SPA box check box is selected.
- To double-check your settings, click the MSN account and then click Properties.
How to Manually Configure Outlook Express for MSN Newsgroups
- Start Outlook Express. If the Internet Connection Wizard starts, quit the wizard by clicking the Close button (the "X" button) in the upper-right corner of the Internet Connection Wizard dialog box).
- On the Tools/Accounts menu, click Add, and then click News.
- Type your alias on the first screen, and then click Next.
- Type your e-mail name (for example,
myname@msn.com). - Type netnews.msn.com for your Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) server name.
- Click to select the My news server requires me to log on check box.
- Type your account name and password, and then click to select the Log on using SPA box check box.
- Click Finish and the news account is now displayed in the accounts window.
- After you click Close, you are prompted to download newsgroups from the news account you added. Click Yes.
How to Manually Configure Outlook Express to Use the MSN Directory Address Book
If you want to use the Directory service to look up the e-mail address for other MSN sites, you need to install the MSN Directory service using the following parameters in the Accounts/New Directory Service:
- You must type msn for the Directory service account name.
- You must type ldap.msn.com for the server name.
- The This server requires me to log on check box must be selected.
- You must type your username for the account name.
- You must leave the Password box blank.
- The Log on using Secure Password Authentication check box must be selected.
- The Check names against this server when sending mail check box must be selected.
