SUMMARY

This article describes the steps required to manually configure a BackOffice Server-based computer running Proxy 1.0 or Proxy 2.0 to use a static connection to the Internet. After you complete the following steps accurately, the BackOffice Server-based computer uses Microsoft Proxy Server and the dedicated Internet connection to provide Internet access to client computers on your internal network. Note that the following information or conditions must exist to use the steps in this article:

  • BackOffice 4.0 or 4.5 with Proxy 1.0 or 2.0 is already installed or SBS 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5 with Proxy 1.0 or Proxy 2.0 is already installed.
  • There are two network adapters installed in the server.
  • The 10.0.0.X Internet Protocol (IP) addressing scheme will be used on the internal network.
  • You have the following information from your Internet Service Provider (ISP):


    • IP Address
    • Subnet Mask
    • Default Gateway
    • Primary DNS Server IP address
    • Secondary DNS IP Address (optional)
    • DNS Suffix Search Order (optional)

WARNING: Do not perform the following procedure if you do not have all of the preceding information.

Typically, a static connection to the Internet through a router, cable modem or xDSL-based router has a topology similar to this diagram

ISP - device - external network adapter (server)/internal network adapter - hub - client computers

where device is the router, cable modem, xDSL-based router, or ISDN adapter. Note that in some instances there may be a hub located between device and external network adapter (server).

  1. Verify that you have 2 network adapters installed with the correct device drivers and then adjust the IP addressing:

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
    2. Click the Protocols tab, and then view TCP/IP Properties.

      where x.x.x.x addresses are the addresses supplied by your ISP.

      NOTE: If WINS will be utilized on the internal network, WINS Server IP properties should only be assigned to the internal network adapter. Also, DNS settings are global and should be configured based on the information provided by the ISP.

  2. Verify that the bindings are set correctly for proper NetBIOS functionality:

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
    2. Click the Bindings tab, and then change the view to All Protocols.
    3. Expand the WINS Client (TCP/IP) protocol, move the internal network adapter to the top of the list, and then move the external network adapter to the second position in the list.
    4. Under the WINS Client (TCP/IP) protocol, select the external network adapter and click Disable.
    5. Expand the TCP/IP Protocol, move the internal network adapter to the top of the list, and then move the external network adapter to the second position in the list. Click OK, click OK again, and then restart your computer.
  3. Check your proxy settings. Verify that "auto dial" is disabled, and remove all information from the Autodial Credentials tab by using the appropriate method:

    Proxy 1.0

    1. Click Start, point to Programs, click Microsoft Proxy Server, click Auto Dial Configuration, and then click to clear the Enable Dial on Demand check box.
    2. Click the Credentials tab, clear all fields, click OK, and then click OK.

    Proxy 2.0

    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows NT Option Pack, point to Internet Information Server, and then click Internet Service Manager.
    2. Expand Internet Information Server, expand your server name, view Winsock Proxy Properties, click Auto Dial, and then click to clear all the Dialing Options check boxes.
    3. Click the Credentials tab, clear all fields, click OK, click OK, and then quit to the desktop.
  4. Update the LAT table to reflect the internal network address and host ID to be isolated by using the appropriate method:

    Proxy 1.0

    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Proxy Server, and then click Internet Service Manager.
    2. View WinSock Proxy Service Properties, click Edit Local Address Table, and then click Construct Table.
    3. Click the "Load known address ranges from the following IP interface cards" option, click to select the internal network adapter check box, do not click to select any other check boxes.
    4. Click OK, click OK, click OK, click OK, and then quit Internet Service Manager.

    Proxy 2.0

    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows NT Option Pack, point to Internet Information Server, and then click Internet Service Manager.
    2. Expand Internet Information Server, expand your server name, and then view Winsock Proxy Properties.
    3. Click Local Address Table, click Construct Table, and then click the Load known address ranges from the following IP interface cards option. Click to select only the internal network adapter check box, and then click OK until you are able to quit the MMC.
  5. Verify that the Web browser program is configured to obtain access to the Internet through proxy by using the appropriate method:

    Internet Explorer 3.x

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet.
    2. Click Connections, and then type http://server name in the HTTP box, where server name is the appropriate server name. Click to select the Use the same proxy for all protocols check box, and then click Bypass Proxy for Intranet Addresses.
    3. Click OK, and then click OK.

    Internet Explorer 4.x

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet.
    2. Click the Connection tab, click to select the Access the Internet using a proxy server check box, click to select the Select Bypass proxy server for local (Intranet) addresses check box, and then click Advanced.
    3. Type http://server name in the HTTP box, and then click to select the Use the same proxy for all protocols check box.
    4. Click OK, and then click OK.

    Internet Explorer 5

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
    2. Click the Connection tab, click to clear the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click to clear the Use automatic configuration script check box.
    3. Click Never dial a connection, click LAN Settings, click Use a proxy server, click Bypass proxy server for local addresses, and then click Advanced.
    4. Type http://server name in the HTTP box, click to select the Use the same proxy for all protocols check box, click OK, and then click OK.
  6. If you are running SBS 4.0 or 4.0a, verify that the WinSock Proxy Configuration (WSP) Client is installed but is disabled. Note that if you are running SBS version 4.5, the WSP client is not normally installed and should not normally be installed at a later time, but if it is installed, make sure it is disabled:

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click WSP Client.
    2. Click to clear the Enable WinSock Proxy Client check box, click OK, and then restart your computer.
  7. Test this configuration from the server:

    1. Use the ping command to ping your default gateway, and then ping one or more known Web sites by name.
    2. Start your Web browser program on the server, and then try to browse one or more known Web sites by name.
