APPLIES TO

This article was previously published under Q236990

SYMPTOMS

When you type a parameter for a Web or database query into a cell, Microsoft Excel does not refresh the query, even though you selected the Refresh automatically when cell value changes check box in the Parameters dialog box.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • The cell that contains the parameter is located on a different worksheet from the query results.

-and-

  • You have saved, closed, and then reopened the file that contains the query.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To temporarily work around this problem, follow these steps:

  1. On the same worksheet that contains the query results, create a formula that links to the cell that currently contains the parameter used in your query. For example, if your parameter is located in cell A1 on Sheet2 in your workbook, the formula would be as follows:

    =Sheet2!A1

  2. Select any cell within your query results.
  3. On the Data menu, point to Get External Data, and then click Parameters.
  4. In the Get the value from the following cell box, type =Cell Reference, where Cell Reference is the cell in which you typed the formula that you created in step 1.
  5. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
