Component Services Explorer displays the following message after you change the default launch or access permissions:
It is not necessary to restart the computer; you can just restart the process. Default launch and access permissions are not cached on the local computer. The RPC Subsystem (RPCSS) reads the default launch permissions during each activation, and the OLE32 subsystem reads the default access permissions. Therefore, just restarting the process is sufficient.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
Certain changes in MyComputer properties require that you restart the computer; these changes include the following:
- Enable Distributed COM on This Computer.
- Enable COM Internet Services on This Computer.
- Default Authentication Level.
- Default Impersonation Level.
- Provide additional security for reference tracking.
- Add, remove, or change the order of DCOM protocols in the Default Protocols tab.
These changes require that the computer be restarted because Component Services Explorer does not call RPCSS to refresh the settings.
If you change the port settings for a specific protocol, you do not need to restart your computer; just restart the application.
