Q236360

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0, Terminal Server Edition
  • Microsoft Cluster Server
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Resource Monitor tool on a computer running Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS), you may notice that the server eventually slows down or stops responding (hangs). You may not notice an immediate drain on resources, but the performance impact could be significant over a long period of time.

CAUSE

A leak in Resource Monitor's own memory causes it to slowly use up all free memory in the computer in order to keep running.

RESOLUTION

Windows NT Server, Cluster Server, or Workstation 4.0

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0 or the individual software update. For information on obtaining the latest service pack, please go to:

MORE INFORMATION

Resource Monitor (Resrcmon.exe) is an MSCS component that monitors the health of each resource through callbacks to the resources and communication with MSCS by using Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs). It also provides the polymorphic interface between generic calls and the specific online operation for that resource.

Clusters are useful in that they simplify the management of servers by allowing an administrator to manage them as a single computer. MSCS has built-in clustering server software in Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition. As well as easier manageability, MSCS offers improved availability, more cost-effective scalability, and automatic failure detection and recovery. MSCS can also be used to move server workload to balance usage and to provide for planned maintenance without down time.

For more information about the features of MSCS as implemented in Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition, please visit the following Microsoft Web site:
