BUG #: 2026 (plato7x)
BUG #: 1544 (plato7x)

SYMPTOMS

If a user is a Windows NT administrator of the OLAP server computer but is not a member of the OLAP administrators group, cube access is always denied. This occurs even if the user is mapped to a role that has read or read/write access to the cube. This behavior is seen from clients such as the MDX sample application, Excel 2000 and so forth.

When executing a MDX statement from the MDX sample application, the user sees the following message:

Unable to open cellset. Access to (<cube name>) was denied.

Or, when a particular cube is selected in the MDX sample application, the user sees the following message:

Unable to expand node. Access to (<cube name>) was denied.

When trying to access the cube from Excel 2000, after clicking the Finish button in the Pivot Table and Pivot Chart wizard the user sees the following message:

Microsoft Excel was unable to get necessary information about this cube. The cube might have been reorganized or changed on the server. Contact the OLAP cube administrator and, if necessary, setup a new data source to connect to the cube.

WORKAROUND

Removing the user from the Administrators group on the server computer provides the user access to OLAP cubes for which he/she has permissions.
