SYMPTOMS

When you print a document that contains the NUMPAGES field (for example, page 1 of 5), the Total Number of Pages field (NUMPAGES) may be printed incorrectly.

NOTE: When you view the Total Number of Pages field (NUMPAGES) on the screen, it appears correctly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To temporarily work around this problem, do one of the following methods before you print your Word 2000 document:

Method 1: Specify Pages to Print

To specify the pages of your document to print, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Print.
  2. In the Print dialog box, under Print range, click Pages.
  3. In the Pages box, type the page range you want to print. For example, if your document consists of 10 pages, type 1-10.
  4. Click OK to print your document.

Method 2: Turn Off Show/Hide

NOTE: The Show/Hide option displays all non-printing characters in your document, such as tabs, spaces, and paragraph marks. To turn off the Show/Hide option, do one of the following:

  • On the Standard toolbar, click Show/Hide. If the Standard toolbar is missing, point to Toolbars on the View menu and click Standard.

-or-

  • On the Tools menu, click Options. On the View tab, clear the All check box, and then click OK.

Method 3: Turn Off Background Printing

NOTE: Background printing allows Word to print your document in the background, so you can continue working in Word while your document is being printed. To turn off background printing, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Print tab, clear the Background printing check box.
  3. Click OK.

Method 4: Turn On Reverse Print Order

NOTE: The Reverse Print Order option prints pages in reverse order, beginning with the last page of the document. Do not use this method if you are printing an envelope.

To turn on the Reverse Print Order option, do the following steps:

  1. On the Tools menu in Word, click Options.
  2. On the Print tab, select the Reverse print order check box.
  3. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
