PPT97: PowerPoint 97 Doesn't Support Animated GIFs

Article ID: 234167

Article Last Modified on 11/9/2000

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q234167

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a picture that is an animated GIF into your PowerPoint presentation, the picture will not animate. When you view your presentation in Slide Show view, your animated GIF will not animate. When you save your presentation in HTML format, your animated GIF will not animate.

CAUSE

PowerPoint does not support the animated GIF format. By default, the GIF graphics import filter used by PowerPoint to import an animated GIF into PowerPoint strips away all but the first frame of the graphic. Even if you save your presentation to HTML using the GIF option, there is no way for PowerPoint to play back that animated GIF, because the animated GIF has already been converted into a static single frame GIF image.

In later versions of Clip Gallery (versions 4.0 and later), animated GIFs appear under the Motion Clips tab. If you are unsure of whether or not a motion clip is a GIF or not, simply display the clip properties for that clip, and see if it is listed as a GIF or AVI. AVIs will play in PowerPoint 97.

STATUS

This problem no longer occurs in PowerPoint 2000.
