SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you open a project that was saved in a language that uses a double-byte character set (Japanese, Chinese, or Korean for example), some characters may not be displayed correctly.

NOTE: This behavior may be visible in columns within a project or in menus or toolbars. Names of views, tables, calendars, filters, reports, modules, forms, maps and toolbars may be displayed in unreadable characters.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because double-byte languages contain some characters that do not correspond to single-byte languages (English for example).

WORKAROUND

Use the appropriate method for your operating system.

On Windows NT 4.0 Only

To correct unreadable characters found in columns in a project, install the font for the language that the file was saved in. For example, if the file was saved in a Japanese localized version of Microsoft Project, install a Japanese font to correctly view the characters.

To work around unreadable characters in the menu or toolbars, rename the views, tables, calendars, filters, reports, modules, forms, maps and toolbars in the organizer. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Organizer.
  2. On the Views tab, select a view that is displayed with unreadable characters.
  3. Click Rename.
  4. In the Rename dialog box, type a new name for the view. Click OK.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 for each view that is displayed with unreadable characters.
  6. Repeat steps 2-5 for each of the tabs in the Organizer.
  7. Click Close to close the Organizer.

On Windows 95 or 98

If you are using a single-byte version of Windows 95/98 (English for example), you can not install a double-byte font to view the unreadable characters in the project columns.

To work around unreadable characters in the menu or toolbars, save the project as a project database and then rename the views, tables, calendars, filters, reports, modules, forms, maps and toolbars in the organizer. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Save As.
  2. In the Save as type list, click Project Database (*.mpd). Click Save.
  3. Close the project and then reopen the project.
  4. On the Tools menu, click Organizer.
  5. On the Views tab, select a view that is displayed with unreadable characters.
  6. Click Rename.
  7. In the Rename dialog box, type a new name for the view. Click OK.
  8. Repeat steps 5-7 for each view that is displayed with unreadable characters.
  9. Repeat steps 5-8 for each of the tabs in the organizer.
  10. Click Close to close the Organizer.
