SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use Microsoft Management Console (MMC) to expand a folder tree on a remote Windows NT 4.0-based computer, you may receive the following error message:

The connection to [servername] could not be established. Check to see that you have sufficient permission to access the Windows Management Instrumentation and that the Windows Management Instrumentation service is started on the computer.

The following error may also be logged in the Event Viewer, where computername is the name of the computer that you are trying to connect to:

Event ID: 10006
Source: DCOM
Description: DCOM got error "Class not registered" from the computer computername when attempting to activate the server: {8BC3F05E-D86B-11D0-A075-00C04FB68820}

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Microsoft Windows Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) is not installed on the Windows NT 4.0-based computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install WBEM on the target Windows NT 4.0-based computer. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Windows-based computer, insert the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  3. In the Named box, type wbemcore.exe, and then click Find Now.
  4. In the list of found files, double-click the Wbemcore.exe file. Follow the instructions on the screen to install WBEM.
  5. When the installation is complete, click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
  6. In the Named box, type wbemuser.exe, and then click Find Now.
  7. In the list of found files, double-click the Wbemuser.exe file.
  8. Configure the permissions you want for the user or group in the domain or workgroup that you use to manage the Windows-based computer remotely.
