SUMMARY
Windows 2000 support the ability to cluster the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) services. This article describes how to configure WINS and DHCP with Windows Clustering.

You can install the server in any of the following ways:
- Install Windows 2000 without initially installing the Cluster service, WINS, or DHCP. Then, add WINS or DHCP and the Cluster service in any order.
- Install Windows 2000 with the Cluster service and add DHCP or WINS at a later time.
- Install Windows 2000 with WINS or DHCP or both and install the Cluster service at a later time.
You should install the WINS or DHCP service on each node in the cluster. For the DHCP service, Microsoft recommends that you install the service on each node but do not configure scopes until after you configure the DHCP service in Cluster Administrator as described later in this article.
After the WINS or DHCP service and the Cluster service is installed, you need to configure a cluster resource. The WINS/DHCP resources each have three dependencies: an IP address, a network name, and a disk. You can create these by using the Configure Application Wizard, or you can preconfigure them manually before adding the WINS/DHCP resource.
NOTE: If this is a clustered DHCP server in a Windows 2000 Active Directory environment, the DHCP server must be authorized in Active Directory before it can respond to requests for IP addresses in configured scopes.
Also note that if WINS is installed on the Cluster, modify the TCP/IP configuration so that the server points to the Virtual IP address for WINS. To do this:
- Right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
- Right-click Network Connection, and then click Properties.
- Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click the Properties button.
- Click Advanced, and then click the WINS tab.
- Type the virtual IP address that will be used for WINS.
Now Cluster nodes will register their own records with WINS successfully.
To configure a WINS/DHCP resource:
- Start the Cluster Administrator tool by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, pointing to Administrative Tools, and then clicking Cluster Administrator. Connect to the cluster to host the DHCP/WINS resource that has the appropriate services already installed.
- In Cluster Administrator, click Configure Application on the File menu. This starts the Configure Application Wizard.
- On the Welcome page, click Next.
- If you have already configured a virtual server, click Use an existing virtual server, and then click the correct group. If not, accept the default (Create a new virtual server), and follow the directions to create a new virtual server. Either choice eventually takes you to the "Create Application Cluster Resource" page. Click Yes, create a cluster resource for my application now.
- Click the appropriate resource type (DHCP or WINS), and then click Next.
- Type a name and description for the resource.
- Click Advanced Properties.
- Click the Dependencies tab. Click Modify, and then double-click a physical disk resource and a network name resource. The network name should already have a dependency on the IP address resource. The resources should then be listed on the right side as dependencies. Click OK. Modify the general and advanced properties of the resource only if there is a specific need to do so. Click OK to accept the defaults.
- On the "Application Resource Name and Description" page, click Next.
- The wizard prompts you for the location of the WINS/DHCP database files. The default location is specified for the dependent disk; you can change the path if you need to. Take care not to accidentally select a disk that is not in the group, and for which there is no dependency. Click Next.
- On the "Completing the Cluster Application Wizard" page, click Finish if the settings are correct, or Back if you need to make changes.
- The resource should appear in an offline state in the correct group. To start the resource, right-click it, and then click Bring Online.
- To verify that the resource has been properly clustered, right-click the group, and then click Move Group. If the group moves successfully, the resource has been correctly created and configured.
