FIX: Local Connections Are Delayed up to 12 Seconds After You Run DBCC Checkdb Command Several Times

Article ID: 223169

Article Last Modified on 9/6/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q223169

BUG #: 18661 (SQLBUG_65)

SYMPTOMS

Local connections to SQL will show a delay of 3 to 12 seconds after dbcc Checkdb has been run multiple times. Network connections do not have a delay in establishing new connections and changing the net library or security method does not change the effect.

WORKAROUND

Run dbcc Checkdb during off hours and stop and restart MSSQLServer service prior to making new local connections.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 6.5. This problem has been corrected in the Post Service Pack 5a Update for Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5. To install the Post Service Pack 5a Update, you must have either SQL Server 6.5 SP5 or SP5a installed.

For information about how to download and install the SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 5a, refer to the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

197177 INF: How to Obtain SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 5a

If you already have SQL Server 6.5 SP5 or SP5a installed, you can download the Post SP5a Update from the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION

Running the Maintenance Wizard in SQL Server Enterprise Manager by default runs dbcc Checkdb against the database scheduled for backup. If several databases are selected, a delay in establishing local connections may occur.

Connections from Internet Information Server (IIS) running on the same computer as SQL Server and/or Scheduled tasks on SQL Server may also be affected by this.
