SYMPTOMS

When you are creating a project using Visual InterDev 6.0, the following error might occur:

Unable to contact web server.

-or-

When trying to Open, Modify, or Save a file in an existing Web project, you receive the error:

An HTTP error occurred. The server could not complete your request. Contact your Internet service provider or Web server administrator to make sure that the server has the FrontPage Server Extensions installed, and that the Web application exists on that server.

CAUSE

This error occurs if Visual InterDev 6.0 is configured to use a proxy server and you are connecting to a Web server on your intranet. By default, Visual InterDev 6.0 uses the computer's system settings for its proxy settings (note: the system settings set in Internet Explorer).

RESOLUTION

Step-by-Step Procedures

  1. Open Visual InterDev 6.0, but do not attempt to create a project. Press Cancel when you are prompted to open or create a project.
  2. On the Tools menu, select Options.
  3. In the Options dialog box, click the plus sign next to Projects.
  4. Click Web Proxy Settings to select that item.
  5. Deselect the Use system settings check box.
  6. Delete any entries in the "HTTP proxy:" text box.
  7. Delete any entries in the "List of hosts without proxy (host:port,...):" text box.
  8. Select the Do not use proxy server for local (intranet) addresses check box.
  9. Click OK.
