SYMPTOMS

When you switch from the Internet Mail Only (IMO) to the Corporate Workgroup (CW) installation of Microsoft Outlook 2000, the information that was contained in your old Internet Messaging Access Protocol (IMAP) account is not transferred to your new installation.

RESOLUTION

Before you convert your mail system from Internet Mail Only to Corporate Workgroup, copy the contents of your IMAP folders to a new personal folder on your computer, while online to your IMAP account.

MORE INFORMATION

IMAP is an open Internet standard that allows for client/server messaging; it gives you the ability to store information on a server. It also allows you to synchronize a local store for off-line access. IMAP is not supported under the Corporate Workgroup option.

To get the information from your old IMAP account into your new Personal Folder, follow these steps:

Create a New Personal Folder and Copy IMAP Contents

  1. Start Outlook. On the Tools menu, click Send/Receive to log on to your IMAP account. This will download the information from your IMAP account to your local computer.
  2. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Personal Folder File(.pst).
  3. Type a name for the new folder, click Create, and then click OK.
  4. On the View menu, click Folder List if it is not already visible.
  5. In the Folder list, with the right mouse button, click the IMAP folder and drag it to the new personal folder. After you release the mouse button, click Copy.

A sub-folder of your new personal folder, called "Top of Personal Folder," is created. All of your sub-folders are below it. The contents of your IMAP server folders are now in a local personal folder.

NOTE: If you receive the error message:

Can't copy the items

when you try to copy the IMAP folder to your new personal folder, you are most likely working offline. To switch back to working online, on the File menu, click to clear the Work Offline check box.

Change your Installation Type from IMO to CW

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Mail Delivery tab, click Reconfigure Mail Support.
  3. In the E-Mail Service Options dialog box, click to select the Corporate or Workgroup support check box, and then click Next.
  4. Read the warning message, and then click Yes. Outlook will close.
  5. Start Outlook. The Windows Installer will start and install the required files.
