SYMPTOMS
When you edit text in your document, the text may be changed into unreadable or incorrect characters. For example the text may be changed into characters such as the lowercase umlaut "Y" (the ASCII character 255).
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
- You are editing a long document.
- The document contains multiple floating images.
- The Allow Fast Saves check box is selected on the Save tab of the Preferences dialog box (on the Tools menu, click Preferences).
RESOLUTION
To correct this problem, obtain the Office 98 Update for Mac OS 8.5. For more information about the Office 98 Update for Mac OS 8.5, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To temporarily work around this problem, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Preferences, and click the Save tab.
- Click to clear the Allow Fast Saves and Save AutoRecover Info Every check boxes.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition. This problem has been corrected in the Office 98 Update for Mac OS 8.5.
