APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Word 98 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q194379

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Word document, the document may not be paginated the way that you expect. Line breaks or spacing may appear, and the document may be printed differently from the original document.

CAUSE

Cause 1

In OS 8.5, Apple changed the font metrics of certain fonts. In Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, the font metrics are based on existing font dimension information. As a result, Word 98 calculates the line spacing based on the current font information. This can result in a difference in pagination on computers that are running OS 8.1 and earlier and those that are running OS 8.5 or later.

For more information, please review the Apple Technical Information Library article at the following URL:

Cause 2

These symptoms can occur when you open a document that was created in a version of Word earlier than Word 6.0.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods appropriate to your situation.

Method 1

Download and install the Combined Updater for Microsoft Office 98. For additional information about the Combined Updater for Office 98, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Method 2

Turn on the Use printer metrics to lay out document option by following these steps:

  1. Open a document in Word 98.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Preferences, and then click the Compatibility tab.
  3. In the Options box, click to select the Use printer metrics to lay out document check box, and then click OK.

Method 3

Change the font by following these steps:

  1. Select the text that shows this behavior.
  2. On the Format menu, click Font. On the Font tab, select a different font, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem has been corrected in the Office 98 Update for Mac OS 8.5.
